The first page of Chapter 1

She sits on the edge of the sofa. The material is scratchy to the back of her legs. She wonders why anyone would have picked this particular upholstery fabric, it offers no comfort and is painful to the eyes. Ultimately, her mind is in chaos and silent at the same time. She can hear all the sounds around her, hoping to hear the one she doesn’t. She awaits the car to pick her up, one she is fearful won’t come. Her palms are wet with sweat and the backs of the legs are sticking to the uncomfortable sofa fabric. Her stomach is in knots, she has been to the bathroom twice this afternoon. Her bag is packed and waiting by the door. He enters the room and she lowers her eyes. She hopes that he won’t issue any threats yet. She knows they will come. The seconds on the clock are moving in slow motion and still no car approaches. “If she isn’t here soon, you won’t spend the weekend with her. If she can’t pick you up on time, you can’t go.”  he says. His threats are real, they aren’t just words. They are meant to sting and they do but, they are backed with real bite. Her nerves racket up and she knows her time is limited and still no car. She has told all her friends she has plans so, if the car does not arrive, she will be home with “them” this weekend. The phone in the kitchen rings and a mixture of fear and excitement enter her. “Hello, Mom?” she greets. “Hi Baby! I am running late, I think it may be better if I pick you up in the morning. I’ll be there early, gotta go baby, see you tomorrow.” She hangs up the phone and sighs. She knows what is coming. He will tell her he told her so. Mom won’t come in the morning. The phone will ring again in the late morning and she will hear her mother tell her, “next weekend, baby.” He will threaten that he will take away all visits. She heads to her room. While her friends celebrate the weekend and teenage life, she will wonder why she isn’t enough.
